Given Anna Hazare’s background as a soldier and social activist, it is unlikely that he will give in before his mission is accomplished. "I have been fighting against corruption for the last 25 years. Corruption has increased so much and no day passes when you don't get to hear any corruption related news. I have given my life for the country and society. So I decided to do something, but never expected it would grow so big," he added. “A political activist described as a modern-day Gandhi has rattled India's ruling class by going on hunger strike in support of a new anti-corruption law. The repercussions threaten to discredit India's claim to be a genuinely democratic nation. Anna Hazare, 73, began a 'Fast unto death' in April this year in an effort to force the ruling coalition to do something about corruption which is endemic in India's government and civil service. He was demanding that ordinary Indians should have a say in the drafting of a 'Jan Lokpal Bill' - or citizens' bill – to clean-up politics. Support for social activist Anna Hazare for his campaign against corruption and for the Jan Lokpal Bill swelled on day by day with tens of thousands of people in scores of cities across the country responding to his indefinite fast
